A 91-year-old woman drowned in an irrigation canal in Sing Buri early Wednesday, police said.

The body of Graeb Inmud was found in the canal about 800 metres from her house in Moo 7 village in Tambon Pho Chon Kai in Singburi’s Bang Rachan district.

Rescuers spent about two hours searching for the body after police were alerted at 7.30am that the woman had disappeared from the house.

The woman lived alone in the house on the bank of the canal.

Pongsak Wanwai, a grandson-in-law of the woman, said he had been told by his neighbours that they heard a noise at 2am so he went to check Graeb’s house and did not find her. The house’s door was left open and the fan was turned on, so he checked the canal and found traces of somebody slipping into it.
