BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, observed a mass tsunami-evacuation drill at Phuket’s Deep Sea Port on Monday (July 8). The exercise was conducted to ensure that relevant agencies will work together and respond to emergencies promptly.

Participants were taken to safety during the Integrated Disaster Management Exercise 2019 (IDMEx 2019), organized by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. The drill took place at six stations in the southern coastal province of Phuket.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the Royal Thai Army, the Royal Thai Navy, the Royal Thai Air Force, members of a royal volunteer project, private agencies and the general public participated in the event. The drill enabled all sides to understand their roles and responsibilities in emergency situations. During the exercise, search and rescue teams scoured rubble for survivors, coordinating with medical units to provide further assistance, and verifying the participants’ identities.

Along the coast, the Royal Thai Air Force, the Royal Thai Navy and the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center jointly performed the evacuation drill for 45 minutes. At 1 p.m. on Monday (July 8), the Prime Minister arrived in Phuket to observe the exercise.

Gen. Prayut also observed operations at the public disaster relief volunteer center, a shelter center, a field hospital and an incident command post. He also observed the Phuket Deep Sea Port Development project in Makham Bay, Phuket province.

This morning, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha also officially opened the Chalong intersection underpass in the southern province of Phuket, aimed at easing heavy traffic and promoting tourism on the island.

The Director-General of the Government Public Relations Department (PRD), Lt. Gen. Sansern Kaewkumnerd, visited Phuket to follow up on public relations activities relating to the Prime Minister. On this occasion, Lt. Gen. Sansern presided over the opening ceremony of the Chalong Underpass and observed the IDMEx 2019. The event was broadcast live on NBT South channel and social media. The media agency has been instructed to present news and information in a more compelling way and cover human-interest topics.
